Looking Back at 2019 on Brainly.com
2019 brought about a new direction to learning for Brainly.com. We saw millions of new faces challenging each other with a wide range of questions, many of which we hadn’t seen before.
And the community was there to help; Brainly users shared 2.4 million answers over the course of the year.
Here’s a look at the impact of those answers:
Answers by Subject
Answers came across all of Brainly’s 21 subjects, but Math, Social Studies, Science, and English were the favorites by a wide margin.
Math was the runaway winner, making up 36% of all of the year’s answers. It was also the most popular subject among middle-school students, who introduced lots of numerical riddles. High-school students trended more on algebraic functions.
Social Studies took second place, with 20% of answers. This accounts for the answers in our History, and Geography subjects along with “Social Studies;” together, they make up the most answered high-school questions. Younger students tended toward questions on types of government, whereas their seniors asked a lot about the Rule of Law.
In third came Science at 18%. This combination of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics questions featured trending topics in chemical reactions for high-school students and sustainability for middle-schoolers. Science was also the most popular subject among college students.
In a not-too-distant fourth came English (12%). High school students were especially focused on the effects of social media, whereas the young ones asked more about persuasive techniques.
No other subject held more than 5% of total answers across all grades. Business comprised 14% of college students’ answers but didn’t break the barrier at a secondary level.
Answers by State
We used page traffic data to measure the subjects by their popularity across the U.S. The results are diverse and subtly regional.
Math was once again the big winner, nailing the most popular spot in 30 states and D.C. Math made the top 3 most popular subjects of every state except for North Dakota.
Social Studies won 16 states, nabbing the 2nd-place spot in another 21 and third in the rest. The map shows a concentration along with the vertical of states between North Dakota and Texas. Have we discovered a correlation between history and… tornadoes?
Science took #1 in only 3 states, all of which are in the Northeast. Even still, science made the top 3 in a strong majority.
In fourth once again was English, a rare top contender but the winner for Indiana. Who knew the Hoosier State had an affinity for literature?
No other subject ranked in the top 3 most popular for any state.
